The Language of Light brings together a new collection of paintings by British artist David Cottingham, exploring light as both a physical presence and an emotional force.
Throughout his career, Cottingham has been fascinated by the way light transforms what we see. Moving between abstraction and figuration, his paintings capture fleeting moments — reflections across water, the warmth of a setting sun, the atmosphere of a landscape, and the energy and movement of the human figure.
Colour, gesture and layered brushwork create works that feel alive with movement. Rather than simply depicting a place or a moment, Cottingham uses light to evoke memory, mood and sensation. Familiar forms emerge and dissolve, allowing each painting to sit somewhere between observation and imagination.
The Language of Light celebrates this continuing exploration, bringing together works in which colour and light become a language of their own.
