In The Lake at
Sunset, David Cottingham transforms the landscape into an almost immersive
experience of colour and light. Rather than describing a particular place
literally, the painting captures the memory and sensation of being within a
landscape at the moment the light begins to disappear.
A
brilliant orange sun burns through layers of turquoise, deep blue and green,
while flashes of crimson and pink punctuate the surface. Cottingham’s energetic
handling of paint gives the landscape a sense of movement: water, sky and land
appear to merge, creating something poised between abstraction and recognition.
The painting
reflects Cottingham’s longstanding interest in landscape as an emotional rather
than purely observed experience.
